How to learn to play drums on YouTube

This video collage pays homage to various interpretations of the same song that can be found in tutorials for drummers on YouTube. In a journey through different sound spaces of living rooms, stage shows and recording studios, the film collects the ABC’s of the drummer: from the skilful finger acrobatics with the drum sticks in every break to the dramatic final beat at the end of the song.

With a passionate lack of talent, I once played drums in a band as well. Had there been YouTube with so many teachers back then, my performances might have looked very different.

Diese Videocollage ist eine Hommage an die vielfältigen Interpretationen des immer gleichen Songs, wie er in Tutorials für Schlagzeuger auf YouTube zu finden ist. In einer Reise durch unterschiedliche Klangräume von Wohnzimmern, Bühnenshows und Tonstudios, versammelt der Film ein Best Of des Schlagzeuger-Einmaleins: geschickte Fingerakrobatik mit den Drumsticks in jeder Spielpause und der dramatische letzte Schlag am Ende des Songs.

Mit leidenschaftlicher Untalentiertheit, war ich selbst Schlagzeuger in einer Band. Hätte es damals YouTube mit so vielen LehrerInnen gegeben, hätte das vielleicht anders ausgesehen.
